RESEARCH

Our research groups are dedicated to the study of mathematical structures with a high degree of symmetry. Our research covers the following areas:

Matrix Groups and Computational Group Theory

Studying symmetry using computers, and in particular, the development of highly sophisticated algorithms for such a study.

Closeup of a Petri Dish

Permutation Groups

Researching the fundamental properties of permutation groups and use the developed theory to study classes of mathematical objects with a high degree of symmetry, such as graphs and geometries.

Petri Dish

Graph Theory (Structure and Symmetry)

Solving a number of important open problems on Cayley graphs, and have significantly changed the status of various important topics in the area.

Embryonic Stem Cells

Finite Geometry and Buildings

Linking geometry with a finite number of objects with experimental design, information security, particle physics and coding theory.

Embryonic Stem Cells

Matroid Theory

Providing a very high level coarse description of any proper minor-closed class of graphs or binary matroids, but cannot be used to determine the fine-grained structure of any particular class.

LOOKING TO DO A PHD?

Staff in the centre are eager to supervise PhD or Masters by research students in the areas of group theory and combinatorics. Students interested in applying should contact potential supervisors directly or email us.

The Centre is willing to pay for prospective PhD students from Australia to travel here so that you can discuss your options for a research project, get to know us and imagine yourself living in Perth. If you would like to take up this opportunity then please email us to apply.
