The Fields Medal is the most prestigious prize in mathematics, equivalent to the Nobel Prize in our subject. Every four years, between two and four mathematicians with an age limit of 40, are awarded a Fields Medal for excellence in mathematics. This year, 2018, one of the medals was awarded to UWA graduate Akshay Venkatesh, who is currently a professor at Stanford University. Akshay is well known to our research group, not only as a former student, but was recently a Professor at Large (a visiting professor). There is a great article at the Quanta magazine about him and his work. Other articles are here, here, and here. You can also find a video here.
